Nomination of the Alaska Highway as a National Historic Site

This project will involve conducting an inventory of key sites along the Alaska Highway within the Peace River Regional District and preparing supporting documentation for the further coordination of achieving designation of the Alaska Highway as a National Historic Site. The National Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada's (NHSMB) criteria will serve as the guiding document to complete the process to have the Alaska Highway nominated as a National Historic Site. The project will:

  • identify "in situ cultural resources and artefacts" and selectively build arguments
  • capture the sense/spirit of place, the authenticity and integrity; then identifying the owners, custodial rights and gathering community support
  • make suggestions for further research

PRRD Signage Inventory & Plan

This project will include conducting a signage inventory assessment and plan along the roadways within the Regional District. This will involve:

  • information gathering and on-the ground assessments to identify the types of signs that currently exist, the gaps, and potential resources
  • identification of key sites, rest stops, interpretive signs and more
  • creating a signage plan to support future planning and integration of the Regional District’s roadways also as a contributing element to the nomination of the Alaska Highway as a designated National Historic Site

Funding for these projects has been provided by the Union of BC Municipalities through the Community Tourism Program.
